apibrėžtis Žmogaus ugdymo tyrimų dalykas. Jis apima visą žmogaus esmę: jo biofizinę (somatinę) sandarą, sielą (psichiką), santykius, kultūrą, dvasią. Ugdymo proceso struktūrą sudaro jo tikslas, tikslus atitinkanti ugdomoji informacija (episteminė, technologinė, vertybinė), t. y. ugdymo gėrybės, ugdytojas bei ugdymo veikėjai (tėvai, mokytojai ir kt.), jų ugdomoji veikla, ugdytinis, saviugdos aktyvumas, adaptyvumas, keitimasis fizine ir dvasine patirtimi ugdytojui ir ugdytiniui sąveikaujant, sąveikos priemonės ir situacijos, sąveikos valdymas. Toks žmogaus ir ugdymo vyksmo skaidymas leidžia teigti, kad ugdymas yra tikslinga ugdytojo ir ugdytinio sąveika, brandinanti žmogaus biofizinę sandarą, psichiką, santykius, kultūrą ir dvasią. Vertėtų atkreipti dėmesį į tai, kad apibrėžimuose kartais pasakomas ugdymo tikslas. Tai klaida, nes apibrėžiant reikia atskleisti dalyko esmę. Tai daroma loginiu apibrėžimu (per genus proximum et differentiam specificam). Edukologija turi aiškų tyrimų objektą. Be to, ji turi ir kitų fundamentalaus mokslo požymių, būtent: • teikia naujos informacijos apie ugdymo tikrovę, • jos pagrindas yra sukurta mokslinė teorija, • turi specialus ugdymo tikrovės tyrimo metodus ir jų metodologiją, • yra sukaupta žinių apie ugdymo tikrovę sistema, • būdinga griežta loginė informacijos strukrūra.
